Our Best Mattress Size Guide
Other than personal taste, there are a number of factors to think about before selecting your mattress size. Have you considered: the dimensions of the bedroom, if you plan to share the bed with your partner or pets, the importance of open space versus sleep space to you? There are six different size descriptions below that will give you a better idea of what to order when you buy a mattress online.
The Twin or Single mattress measures 38 inches wide by 75 inches long (97 x 191 cm) was introduced to the American market after the Civil War. Being the smallest bed in a box size available, it's best for children and single adults. Another great reason to purchase a Twin size is if you are conscious about living space in small or studio apartments.
Twin XL Mattress
We all have those taller than average people in our lives and the Twin XL is perfect for them and for college dorm rooms. It measures five inches more than a twin, putting it at 38 inches wide and 80 inches long (97 x 203 cm). Now tall guys can rest easy without hitting their heads or feet against the headboards or footboards.
Sometimes called a “Double,” the Full mattress is a great choice for those graduating college or those purchasing their first home as a single adult. The Full measures 54 inches wide and 75 inches long (137 x 191 cm). Since the Full only measures 16 inches more than the twin in terms of width, it is not recommended for partners that need extra space or share with pets or children. Guest rooms would provide an ideal location for Full mattresses.
Named after Queen Elizabeth I herself, the Queen is the most popular mattress size in the US. A master bedroom that’s at least 10 x 10 square feet would be the ideal space for a Queen. With dimensions of 60 inches wide and 80 inches long (152 x 203 cm), couples will fit comfortably, and individuals will have more than enough room for any kind of sleeping style.
The biggest mattress in terms of width, the King measures 76 inches wide and 80 inches long (193 x 191 cm). The King mattress offers plenty of space for couples and room to spare for children or medium-sized pets. We recommend having a larger master bedroom to fit the king of at least 12 x 10 square feet. Fun fact: the King mattress was invented in 1890 and could fit up to 15 people!
The California King mattress measures an astounding 72 inches wide and 84 inches long (183 x 213 cm) and is the longest mattress size out there. It’s perfect for taller individuals thanks to its exceptional length, especially those taller than six feet. Clearly you don’t have to be a tall person to enjoy the roominess of a California King, as you will find plenty of space to enjoy with your partner, children, and/or pets.
